history

The diocese of Punta Arenas was founded on October 4, 1916 by Pope Benedict XV. from the area of ​​the Apostolic Prefecture of Patagonia as Vicariate Apostolic Magallanes-Islas Malvinas .

On January 27, 1947, the Vicariate Apostolic Magallanes-Islas Malvinas was by Pope Pius XII. raised to a diocese with the papal bull Ut in amplissimo Patagoniae Chilensis territorio and renamed the diocese of Punta Arenas . The diocese is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Puerto Montt as a suffragan .
