Christ we should already praise
Christ we should praise is already a Christmas carol by Martin Luther .
He composed it in 1524 as a rhyming transference of the old church A solis ortus cardine ( see text synopsis there) and also kept its melody. Originally one of the main Lutheran songs for Christmas, the Evangelical Hymn book only contains excerpts in some regional church editions (e.g. Rhineland-Westphalia-Lippe No. 539 with Luther's stanzas 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8).
It has been worked on many times in Protestant church music, including a. in Johann Sebastian Bach 's cantata of the same name .
