Career

Scientific activity

Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann first studied folklore, ethnology , anthropology and prehistory with Adolf Spamer, among others . After completing her doctorate at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin in 1940, she experienced the end of the war as a Red Cross sister in Prague , where she also met liberated Jews from the Theresienstadt concentration camp , which shaped her later views and work. From 1946 to 1959 she was a research assistant and then until 1960 deputy director at the Institute for German Folklore of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (DAW) in East Berlin , but lived in West Berlin . In the same year she moved to the Institute for Central European Folk Research , later the Institute for European Ethnology / Cultural Studies , at the University of Marburg . After her habilitation in 1963, she was Professor of European Ethnology from 1968 to 1985. Her main research interests were childhood and family sociology , interethnics as well as celebrations , customs and songs . Her book of Christmas carols , published in 1982, presented the development of the Christmas carol from priestly song to family Christmas carol in a critical edition, but was also conceived as a popular hymn book for the Advent season, which appeared in three editions until 1984 and is still published today.

Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann criticized the orientation of folklore, which was strongly influenced by the “blood and soil” ideology, and in particular language island research (by Kuhn , Jungbauer , Künzig and many others). She contrasted this with her concept of interethnics, which focuses on acculturation and intercultural takeover processes. The expellees' associations criticized their views and attacked them as "traitors to the fatherland". In 1985 she was awarded the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal for having "freed folklore from folklore".

Private

Although her parents were opponents of National Socialism , Weber-Kellermann joined the Association of German Girls as a child , but was never later a member of the NSDAP .

Ingeborg Weber-Kellermann was married; their marriage was divorced before 1968. Her son Heinz worked as a cameraman for his mother's film productions in the 1970s, for example for “Harvest Festival in Maramures ” (1972).
