Fernet-Branca is an Italian bitter ("Amaro") from Fratelli Branca Distillerie Srl in Milan. In Germany it has an alcohol content of 39 % by volume .

history

Fernet-Branca was first produced in 1845 by the Italian Maria Scala, married Branca, as a stomach medicine in Milan . It is said to be based on a panacea from Venice produced under the name Theriak , the recipe of which was bought and modified by the Fernet brothers. Since then, the Fratelli Branca Distillery has been producing the drink according to a secret family recipe with 27 herbs from five continents. According to the manufacturer, Fernet-Branca contains aloe from South Africa, rhubarb from China, gentian from France, galanga from India or Sri Lanka, chamomile from Italy and Argentina, saffron , myrrh and elderflower . It is aged in oak barrels for at least a year. The alcohol content is 39 or 40%, in Italy 43% vol. Like other bitter drinks, it is said to have a digestive effect. The same manufacturer also offers a sweeter, heavily peppermint bitter - Branca-Menta .

The Espace d'Art Contemporain Fernet Branca has been located in a disused factory in Saint-Louis near Basel , built at the beginning of the 20th century for the production of Fernet- Branca .
