history

The Territorial Prelature Illapel was on April 30, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. Erected with the Apostolic Constitution Ad hominis similitudinem from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of La Serena and the Diocese of San Felipe and subordinated to the Archdiocese of La Serena as a suffragan .
