Illapel is a city in the Little North of the South American Andean state of Chile , located in the Región de Coquimbo and has around 29,000 inhabitants (as of 2005).
geography
Illapel is located around 250 km south of the city of Ovalle and is the capital of the Choapa province . The city is located on the Río Illapel and Río Choapa .
climate
The climate is of a dry Mediterranean type. In winter there are more frequent rains. Temperatures are mild all year round.

history
Illapel was founded in 1752 and in 1788 the city was moved to its present location.
Attractions
Las Chinchillas (National Park) is located 15 km north of the city . The park is characterized by its wild chinchilla populations. It was founded in 1984 and is around 42 km² in size.
The city is home to a small archaeological museum. There are many historic colonial-style buildings in Illapel, a number of which date from around 1780.
economy
Illapel lives mainly from livestock farming and from small mining mines. Agriculture is practiced on around 3500 hectares around the Río Choapa, the water supply is a problem for the expansion of the cultivation area. Mainly citrus fruits are grown .
