The Diocese of Iquique ( lat. : Dioecesis Iquiquensis , span. : Diócesis de Iquique ) is in Chile located diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Iquique .

history

The diocese of Iquique was founded in 1880 by Pope Leo XIII. established from the cession of territory by the diocese of Arequipa as the Apostolic Vicariate of Tarapacá . On December 20, 1929 the Apostolic Vicariate Tarapacá was by Pope Pius XI. raised to the diocese and renamed the diocese of Iquique . On February 17, 1959, the diocese gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Territorial Prelature Arica . The diocese of Iquique gave on July 21, 1965 again parts of its territory to establish the territorial prelature of Calama .

The diocese of Iquique is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Antofagasta as a suffragan .
