Francisco Javier Prado Aránguiz SSCC (born March 8, 1929 in Santiago de Chile , † June 23, 2020 ) was a Chilean clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Rancagua in Chile.

Life

Francisco Javier Prado Aránguiz began studying law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile . In 1947 he joined the congregation of the Arnstein Fathers and studied philosophy and theology at the seminary of his order in Los Perales. On September 19, 1953 he received in the Cathedral of Valparaiso by Bishop Rafael Lira Infante the priesthood . From 1954 he was a teacher of history and geography and from 1966 to 1982 rector of the "Colegio de los Sagrados Corazones" in Santiago. In 1968 he became pastor in Viña del Mar; 1982 moved to the parish of San Juan Evangelista in Gómez Carreño and at the same time became educational vicar for the diocese of Valparaíso.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Iquique on July 9, 1984 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Chile Angelo Sodano donated him episcopal ordination on September 2 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Francisco de Borja Valenzuela Ríos , Archbishop ad personam and Bishop of Valparaíso , and Eladio Vicuña Aránguiz , Archbishop of Puerto Montt .

On April 28, 1988 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Valparaíso. In 1990 he was elected a member of the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Conference of Chile. On April 16, 1993, he was appointed bishop of Rancagua. In November 1995 he was appointed general secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Chile, a position he held until 1998. For many years he headed the social pastoral department of the Bishops' Conference. From 1987 to 2003 he was Vice President of the Bishops' Conference. On April 23, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

He was the brother of Jorge Prado , who was Minister of Agriculture during the military regime of General Augusto Pinochet.
