The Erzbistum Arequipa ( lat. : Archidioecesis Arequipensis ) is an in Peru preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Arequipa .

history

The diocese of Arequipa was founded on April 15, 1577 by Pope Gregory XIII. Established with the papal bull Apostolatus officium from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Lima and subordinated to this as a suffragan . On May 23, 1943 the diocese of Arequipa was by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Inter praecipuas raised to the archbishopric. The archbishopric gave up several times in its history parts of its territory to establish new dioceses.
