Luis Sánchez-Moreno Lira
Luis Sánchez-Moreno Lira (born November 12, 1925 in Arequipa , Peru ; † September 28, 2009 in Lima , Peru) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Arequipa .
Archbishop Luis Moreno Sánchez Lira was considered a representative of a remarkable generation in Peru and integrator of famous intellectuals, politicians, scientists and other personalities. He was a promoter of Catholic social teaching .
Life
Luis Sánchez-Moreno Lira studied literature and law with a law degree at the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín de Arequipa (UNSA) after attending the “La Salle” school in Arequipa and Lima . In Barcelona and Madrid , he completed a doctorate in law and has been at the Universidad Central de Madrid in civil law doctorate .
He then joined Opus Dei in Spain , returned to Peru and taught civil law at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) . At the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas ( Angelicum ) in Rome, he received his doctorate in canon law .
He was ordained a priest for Opus Dei in Madrid on August 4, 1957, and worked as a pastor in Peru.
Pope John XXIII appointed him titular bishop of Nilopolis in 1961 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Chiclayo . Archbishop Romolo Carboni , Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, donated his episcopal ordination , co-consecrators were Leonardo José Rodriguez Ballón OFM , Archbishop of Arequipa, and José Dammert Bellido , Bishop of Cajamarca.
Luis Sánchez-Moreno Lira was one of the few people who attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .
Pope Paul VI In 1967, after the death of Daniel Figueroa Villón, he was appointed vicar general and administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo . In 1968 he was appointed Bishop-Prelate of the Territorial Prelature of Yauyos . He was particularly committed to Caritas and the infrastructure for the population, especially the training of teachers. In 1971 he founded the San José seminary, where he was a professor of church history. In 1982 he founded the Cañete Pedagogical Institute. In 1991 he opened the creation of the pilgrimage church of Our Lady Mother of Beautiful Love (Santuario Nuestra Señora Madre del Amor Hermoso) in San Vicente de Cañete, which he initiated .
In 1996, Pope John Paul II was appointed Archbishop of Arequipa . In 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He died after a long illness at the age of 83 and was buried in the pilgrimage church of Our Lady Mother of Beautiful Love in San Vicente de Cañete.
For his pastoral work in Chiclayo and Arequipa, he received the Medalla de Oro de Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo in 2004 and the Medal de Honor del Congreso de la República from the Peruvian Congress in 2009. Previously, he had already received honorary citizenship from the provincial government in Arequipa and honorary doctorates from the universities of San Agustin and Santa Maria de Arequipa .
