Fernando Vargas Ruiz de Somocurcio SJ (born March 8, 1918 in Arequipa , † December 8, 2003 in Lima ) was Archbishop of Arequipa .

Life

Fernando Vargas Ruiz de Somocurcio joined the religious order of the Jesuits and was ordained a priest on December 17, 1949 .

Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Huaraz on September 21, 1971 . The apostolic nuncio in Peru , Luigi Poggi , consecrated him bishop on November 13 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Leonardo José Rodriguez Ballón OFM , Archbishop of Arequipa, and Ricardo Durand Flórez SJ, Archbishop ad personam of Callao .

The Pope appointed him Archbishop of Piura on January 18, 1978 . On September 26, 1980 he was appointed Archbishop of Arequipa. On March 2, 1996, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
