Oscar Rolando Cantuarias pastor (born May 13, 1931 in Ascope (La Libertad), † November 8, 2011 in Lima ) was a Peruvian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Piura.

Life

Oscar Cantuarias pastor studied philosophy and theology at the Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Seminary in Lima. He was ordained a priest on December 17, 1955 and was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Lima . In 1958 he moved to the Diocese of Huacho as a pastor . In Rome he completed a degree in sociology of religion .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 5, 1973 Bishop of Tacna . The Archbishop of Lima, Juan Cardinal Landázuri Ricketts, OFM , ordained him bishop on December 2 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Leonardo José Rodriguez Ballón OFM, Archbishop of Arequipa , and Lorenzo León Alvarado OdeM , Bishop of Huacho. Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Piura on September 9, 1981 . In 1982/83 he had to struggle with the devastating consequences of El Niño in his diocese. He was the host of Pope John Paul II during his trip abroad in Peru in 1985. In 1990 he was the initiator of the first synod in Peru under the motto "Let's build the church together" (Construyamos Juntos Nuestra Iglesia).

On July 11, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation. He died of complications from heart surgery and was buried in the San Miguel Arcángel cemetery near Piura Cathedral.

Act

Archbishop Oscar Cantuarias pastor was committed to the Frente de Defensa de los Intereses de Piura and campaigned against the exploitation of the land and its natural resources to the detriment of its residents. During the armed struggle of the Sendero Luminoso ("Shining Path") he led marches against terror. During the conflict between Peru and Ecuador, he initiated a peace march.

On January 26, 2007, during the 89th General Assembly of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference (CEP), he received the gold medal of Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo for his services on behalf of the Church in Peru .
