Johan Vising

Per Johan Vising (born April 20, 1855 in Överlännäs , Västernorrlands län ; † September 20, 1942 in Gothenburg ) was a Swedish Romance studies and university rector.

Life

Vising received his doctorate in Uppsala in 1882 with the Etude sur le dialecte Anglo-Normand du XIIe siècle (Uppsala 1882). He taught in Lund from 1886 and from 1890 to 1922 as professor of modern European linguistics (especially Romance languages) at the newly founded University of Gothenburg , of which he was rector from 1899 to 1909.

Vising was the recipient of numerous awards, including a. Officer of the Legion of Honor and Commander 1st Class of the North Star Order . From 1892 he was a member of the Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg , served as its secretary from 1899 to 1907 and as its chairman from 1908 to 1909. In 1934 he was made an honorary member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies .
