Juan Cardinal Landázuri Ricketts OFM (born December 19, 1913 in Arequipa , Peru , † January 16, 1997 in Lima ) was Archbishop of Lima .

Life

Juan Landázuri Ricketts entered the Franciscan order and studied Catholic theology and philosophy . On April 6, 1939, he received the sacrament of ordination . He then worked as a lecturer at various Franciscan schools in Peru until 1943 . From 1943 to 1946 he worked as a secretary in the administration of his order. After further studies, he lectured theology at the Franciscan seminary in Ocopa, Peru . In 1951 he became General Definitor of his order.

In 1952 Pope Pius XII appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Rhoina and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Lima, whose leadership Juan Landázuri Ricketts took 1955th He received his episcopal ordination from Juan Gualberto Cardinal Guevara , Archbishop of Lima. Co- consecrators were Leonardo José Rodriguez Ballón (es) OFM , Archbishop of Arequipa , and León Buenaventura de Uriarte Bengoa OFM, Titular Bishop of Madaurus and Vicar Apostolic of Ucayali.

He was accepted into the College of Cardinals in 1962 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli and was a participant in the Second Vatican Council . At various celebrations he represented the Pope as the papal legate .

In 1986, together with the Archbishop of Freiburg, Oskar Saier, he founded the partnership between the Archdiocese of Freiburg and the Church in Peru, which to this day connects 150 parishes and associations.

His age-related resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II in 1993. He died on January 16, 1997 in Lima and was buried in the local cathedral .

Honors

The Premio Nacional Cardenal Juan Landazuri Ricketts is named after Juan Landázuri Ricketts and is awarded annually by the Peruvian Bishops' Conference in the four categories of essay, radio broadcasts, television broadcasts and film.
