Augusto Cardinal Vargas Alzamora SJ (born November 9, 1922 in Lima , Peru ; † September 4, 2000 there ) was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lima .

Life

Augusto Vargas Alzamora appeared in 1940 in the Jesuit order and studied in different houses of the Order in Peru, Argentina and Spain the subjects Catholic theology , philosophy and pedagogy . He received his doctorate in educational sciences from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima . On July 15, 1955, he received the sacrament of ordination . Then worked for twenty years as a spiritual and rector at the Jesuit school "La Inmaculada" in Lima. In addition, he worked as a novice master and as a provincial delegate of the Jesuits for educational issues. He founded several schools and initiated a reorganization of the student pastoral care .

In 1978 Pope Paul VI appointed him . the titular bishop of Cissi and ordered him to the Apostolic Vicar of San Francisco Javier (since 1980 Jaen en Peru o San Francisco Javier ). The episcopal ordination received Augusto Vargas Alzamora by the Apostolic Nuncio in Peru and later cardinal , Carlo Furno ; Co- consecrators were the then Archbishop of Cuzco, Ricardo Durand Flórez SJ, and the then Archbishop of Trujillo, Manuel Prado Pérez-Rosas SJ.

In 1989 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Lima; In 1994 he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Roberto Bellarmino in the college of cardinals . Augusto Cardinal Vargas Alzamora chaired the Peruvian Bishops' Conference from 1993 to 1999 .

He resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Lima in 1999 due to illness and worked the last months of his life as a chaplain for the homeless. Augusto Cardinal Vargas Alzamora died on September 4, 2000 in Lima and was buried in the crypt of the local basilica.
