Juan Luis Cardinal Cipriani Thorne (born December 28, 1943 in Lima , Peru ) is a Peruvian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Lima .

Life

After finishing school, Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne first completed a technical degree at the State Institute for Mechanical Engineering . After completing his studies, he worked as an engineer . He was a national basketball player for Peru for over six years in the 1960s . In 1962 he joined the Prelature Opus Dei and studied Catholic theology as a late caller at the age of 33 . On August 21, 1977 he was ordained a priest for Opus Dei. After further studies he became a doctor of theology doctorate and then worked as a pastor in Lima. At the same time he lectured at the Pontifical College in the field of moral theology . He was vicar of Opus Dei for all of Peru.

On May 23, 1988 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Turuzi and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Ayacucho . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Lima, Juan Cardinal Landázuri Ricketts, OFM, on July 3 of the same year; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Luigi Dossena , Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, and the Archbishop of Ayacucho, Federico Richter Fernandez-Prada .

On May 13, 1995, John Paul II named him Archbishop of Ayacucho o Huamanga as the successor to Federico Richter Fernandez-Prada . On January 9, 1999, he was appointed Archbishop of Lima. Pope John Paul II appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church of San Camillo de Lellis on February 21, 2001 . Cardinal Cipriani took part after the death of John Paul II at the conclave in 2005 and after the resignation of Benedict XVI. participated in the 2013 conclave .

Cipriani appeared internationally through his mediating role in the occupation of the Japanese embassy in Lima by the guerrilla movement MRTA from December 1996 to April 1997.

Cipriani is known for his conservative positions, his strict rejection of liberation theology , statements that are often viewed as controversial, and his unbroken enthusiasm for basketball .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on January 25, 2019.
