Marco Cardinal Cé (born July 8, 1925 in Izano , Province of Cremona , Italy , † May 12, 2014 in Venice ) was Patriarch of Venice . He was one of the defining figures of the Catholic Church in Italy.

Life

Marco Cé came from a family of farmers and received humanistic training in the boys' college of his home diocese of Cremona and at the Lyceum in Lodi . He then completed a degree in Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Pontifical Biblical Institute , from which he graduated with a doctorate in dogmatics and a licentiate in biblical theology .

After his ordination on March 27, 1948, he returned to his home diocese; he taught biblical theology at the local seminary and exercised the office of sub-rain . From 1957 he headed the seminary as Regens and took over the leadership of the liturgical commission of his home diocese, which was subsequently responsible for the implementation of the liturgical reform during and after the Second Vatican Council . Marco Cé also repeatedly offered spiritual retreats for the young people of the Catholic Action as well as priestly retreats .

On April 22, 1970, Cé was by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Titular Bishop of Vulturia and Auxiliary Bishop in Bologna . He received the episcopal ordination on May 17, 1970 by Carlo Manziana , Bishop of Crema . As auxiliary bishop he was assistant to Archbishop Antonio Cardinal Poma , who gave him large parts of the responsibility for the diocese. In 1976 Pope Paul VI appointed him. to the spiritual director of the Catholic Action. His bishop's motto was Christ ipse pax , German  "Christ is our peace" ( Eph 2.14  EU ).

After the sudden death of Pope John Paul I , who was Patriarch of Venice until he was elected, Pope John Paul II made him head of the Archdiocese of Venice on December 7, 1978. His inauguration as Patriarch of Venice took place on January 6 of the following year. Marco Cé belonged to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marco since June 30, 1979. The cosmopolitan Cardinal Cé was long considered papabile . Pope John Paul II accepted Cé's age-related resignation on January 5, 2002.

Shortly before reaching the age of 80, Cé took part in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was elected as the oldest elected cardinal. In March 2006 Cardinal Cé held the first fasting retreat for the new Pope and collaborator of the Curia. He did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he had exceeded the age limit. Cardinal Cé died on May 12, 2014 in a Venetian hospital to which he had previously been admitted after a broken thigh.
