Nilópolis , officially Município de Nilópolis , is a city in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro .

The municipality is 16 meters above sea level and has an area of 19.4 km². It is located in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro . The neighboring municipalities are Mesquita , São João de Meriti and Rio de Janeiro .

As of July 1, 2016, the population in Nilópolis was estimated at 158,319 people, the population density amounts to 8118 inhabitants per square kilometer.
history
On November 16, 1966, a serious railway accident occurred in Nilópolis when two suburban trains collided after one of the two train drivers had run over two signals indicating "stop" . 38 people died.
