Marcel Berni (born June 5, 1988 in Bern ) is a Swiss athlete . He specializes in long-distance running . Together with the Swiss national team, he is the reigning European team champion in the half marathon .

Career

After Berni failed at the World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2011 over the 5000 meters after the heats, he secured the silver medal in the half marathon at the Swiss Championships in Lausanne that same year . A year later he started at the European Cross Country Championships in Hungarian Budapest and came on the 70th rank. In 2013 Berni started in Uster at the Swiss championships over 10 km and in the half marathon and won bronze and silver. Shortly afterwards he started the Summer Universiade in Kazan and came 39th in the half marathon. In 2016, Berni became Swiss champion in long distance cross-country skiing. At the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016 , he finished 67th. In the team classification, however, he secured the gold medal with Tadesse Abraham , Julien Lyon , Adrian Lehmann , Christian Kreienbühl and Andreas Kempf two seconds ahead of the Spanish team.

At the Rotterdam Marathon 2018, Berni was again able to meet the required standard for the European Athletics Championships 2018 with a time of 2:19:19 h in the marathon .

In 2019, he and Nicole Büchler were elected athletes' representative for Swiss Athletics .
