Amalie Hammild Iuel (born April 17, 1994 in Aalborg ) is a Norwegian athlete of Danish origin who has been competing for Norway since 2015 and specializes in the 400-meter hurdles .
Athletic career
Amalie Iuel was born in Denmark, but lived in Norway for a long time until the family moved to different countries, including Namibia and Pakistan, due to professional interests. She completed her school education in Thailand and has since studied at the University of Southern California .
In 2015 she set two U23 national records over 400 meter hurdles for Denmark and Norway. Shortly before the U23 European Championships in Tallinn , where she achieved sixth place with a new U23 record of 56.36 s, Iuel decided to start internationally exclusively for Norway. She also qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where she was eliminated in advance with 56.59 s . In 2016 Iuel competed in a heptathlon for the first time and already exceeded the 6000 point mark in her second competition in Seattle . In June 2016 she achieved a new personal best in the semifinals at the European Championships in Amsterdam with 55.79 s and later finished sixth in the final in 56.24 s. So she qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where she was eliminated with 56.75 in the first round . In 2017 she qualified again for the World Championships in London , where she was eliminated again with 56.42 s in the preliminary round. She also took part in the competitions over 400 meters, but was eliminated there with 52.55 s in the first round .
In 2018 she started at the European Championships in Berlin and was eliminated there with 55.81 seconds in the semifinals. The following year she won the bronze medal at the Summer Universiade in Naples in 56.13 seconds behind the Italian Ayomide Folorunso and Zenéy van der Walt from South Africa. At the beginning of October she reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Doha , where she was eliminated with 55.03 s.
In 2016 and 2017, as in 2019, Iuel was Norwegian champion in the 400-meter hurdles and from 2017 to 2019 also over 400 meters. In 2020 she became champion over 400 meters in the hall and in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
