Delano Williams (born December 23, 1993 ) is a sprinter from the Turks and Caicos Islands .

Life

Delano Williams grew up on Grand Turk Island as the son of a native of the island and a Haitian . In 2008 he moved to Jamaica - leaving his mother and sister behind - after Hurricane Ike destroyed his school and lacked educational opportunities. He now began to attend Munro College in Saint Elizabeth Parish and to train for the sprint distances under his teacher Neil Harrison. In 2010 he took part in the Junior World Championships in Moncton, where he reached the semi-finals over the 100-meter distance as well as the 200-meter distance. In 2011 he set his new best performances of 10.51 s over 100 meters and 20.73 s over 200 meters at the CARIFTA Junior Games in Montego Bay. He won the gold medal over the latter route.

It then attracted worldwide attention in 2012. First it was able to increase to 10.34 s and 20.53 s at the beginning of the year, before winning gold over 200 meters at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona . Meanwhile, he strove to participate in the Olympic Games in London . Since he would not be admitted as a representative of the Turks and Caicos Islands , as his homeland is not recognized by the IOC , he applied for a British passport, which he also received as a citizen of a British overseas territory . At the Olympic Trials he only finished seventh and was therefore unable to qualify for the Olympics.

When he started the season with the Gibson Relays in February 2013, a time of 44.80 s was measured for his run in the 4 × 400 m relay . On March 16, he even set the provisional world annual best in Kingston with 20.27 s. The next day he also improved over 100 meters with now 10.28 s. At the British Championships in July, he was third over 200 meters with 20.58 s. On July 26th, he started in London for the first time at a Diamond League meeting . After 20.74 s he finished ninth. At the World Championships in Moscow he started again for Great Britain and made it to the semifinals, where he was eliminated with 20.61 s. In 2015 he won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Beijing with his country's 4 × 400 m relay, as well as at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam .
