Theresia Kiesl (née Stöbich ; born October 26, 1963 in Sarleinsbach , Upper Austria ) is a former Austrian middle-distance runner who was third in the 1996 Olympic Games in the 1,500-meter run .

Life

At the European Indoor Championships in Genoa in 1992, Kiesl finished fifth in 4: 08.82 minutes. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona she reached the semifinals. In 1993 Kiesl ran in the final at the World Championships in Stuttgart, after 4: 08.04 min she finished sixth. In the same year she set her best times over 800 meters (2: 00.75 min) and 3000 meters (8: 55.56 min).

After a baby break, she returned to the career in 1995 and reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Gothenburg. The 1996 European Indoor Championships also took place in Sweden, in Stockholm Kiesl finished fifth in 4: 12.61 minutes.

Olympic medal 1996

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta Kiesl won in the first run ahead of Swetlana Masterkowa and Hassiba Boulmerka . In the semifinals she also ran away from the front and won ahead of Gabriela Szabo and Masterkowa. In the final, Masterkowa ensured a much higher pace and won from the front ahead of Szabo. Kiesl took third place in 4: 03.02 min and set an Austrian record that still stands (as of 2016). For the first Olympic medal of an Austrian athlete since Ilona Gusenbauer 24 years earlier, Kiesl was voted Sportswoman of the Year .

At the end of her career, she became European indoor champion in Valencia in 1998 . In 4: 13.62 minutes she won by over a second over Lidia Chojecka .

She won the Austrian championships in the 800 meter run from 1989 to 1993 and over 1500 meters in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 1997. She achieved her best time in the mile run in 1997 with 4: 25.05 min.

Theresia Kiesl is 1.72 m tall and weighed 59 kg at competition times. She is married to Manfred Kiesl and the mother of two children, born in 1987 and 1994. She has been a member of the Upper Austrian Landtag for the ÖVP since 2003 .

Doping allegation 1998

In 1998, doping preparations were seized in Theresia Kiesl's apartment , which her husband, who is active in the fitness scene, is said to have stored there without her knowledge. In 2001 Manfred Kiesl was convicted of trading in anabolic steroids under financial criminal law. The affair was listed in 2007 by the weekly newspaper Die Zeit as an example of a lax approach to doping in Austrian sports and was the subject of an exchange between Kiesl and SP MP Vera Lischka .
