Mateusz Borkowski (born April 2, 1997 in Starachowice ) is a Polish athlete who specializes in medium-distance runs .

Athletic career

Mateusz Borkowski first competed in national youth championships in 2012, when he won the U16 title over the 2000 meter distance. A year later he was Polish U18 indoor champion over the same distance. In July he competed over 3000 meters at the European Summer Youth Olympic Festival in Utrecht, where he took first place in 8: 28.89 minutes. In 2014, he competed over 1500 meters at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. There he reached the B final, in which he finished fourth in 3: 55.58 minutes and was thus 13th overall. At the beginning of the 2015 season, Borkowski increasingly focused on the 800-meter distance. Over this distance he entered the U20 European Championships in Eskilstuna. He survived the preliminary and semi-finals with times of just over 1:50 minutes. In the final he won the bronze medal with 1: 49.21 min.

In 2016 he also competed in the U20 World Championships in his home country of Poland over 800 meters, but was sixth in his prelim in 1: 50.93 minutes, but could not move into the next round. In 2017 he started at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade, his first international adult championship , in winter . He failed as third in his preliminary run just short of making it to the semi-finals and took 16th place overall. In April he took part in the IAAF World Relays , the relay world championships, together with the Polish 4-x-800-meter relay . The Polish team won the bronze medal with a time of 7: 18.74 minutes. In July, like the U20 World Championships, the U23 European Championships took place in Bydgoszcz. In 1: 48.92 minutes, Borkowski just missed the podium as fourth. In August, he joined the Universiade as a student at the Kazimierz Górski Higher School of Sports in Łódź . There he started over 1500 meters and finished 12th.

In 2018, Borkowski started over 800 meters at the European Championships in Berlin. After surviving the preliminary and semi-finals, he increased his best time in the final to 1: 45.42 minutes and came in fifth. At the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019, he failed in the pre-run over the 800 meters and finished eleventh. In July he last competed at the U23 European Championships and was able to win the title in 1: 48.75 minutes.
