Davide Re (born March 16, 1993 in Milan ) is an Italian athlete who specializes in the 400-meter run . In this discipline he is the holder of the national record.

Life

Davide Re was born in the city of Milan and grew up in Imperia in the Liguria region. Up to the age of 16 he only spent the summer months with athletics training. During the remainder of the year he did alpine skiing . He has lived in Rieti since 2016, where he is trained by Maria Chiara Milardi. He graduated in social sciences and worked as a ski instructor for a while before enrolling in the Medical Faculty of the University of Turin .

Athletic career

Re has been competing in international 400-meter races since 2009. In July he took part in the U18 World Championships in his home country . Over 400 meters he reached the semifinals, in which he was eliminated as the last of his run. With a time of 50.68 s, he was last in the overall result of the three semi-finals. With the season he was also eliminated just in advance. He improved at the end of the same month at the European Summer Youth Olympic Festival in Tampere. He won the bronze medal in 48.57 s. The following seasons he did not take part in international championships. In July 2011 he was able to stay below 48 seconds for the first time. In the following season he was able to confirm times under 48 seconds several times, but he was only able to participate in the U20 World Championships in Barcelona with the relay . The Italian quartet managed to make it into the final, in which it was, however, disqualified.

In 2013, Re ran for the first time under 47 seconds at the Italian championships in his hometown. In the final, he could not confirm the time and came in fifth. In 2014, too, it stayed below 47 seconds several times and was able to run smoothly to 46.00 seconds in July. In doing so, he also fulfilled the standard for participating in the European Championships in Zurich. When he participated in the European Championship for the first time, he was eliminated in sixth place. In total, he left 14 runners behind, finishing in 26th place. In 2015 he started at the U23 European Championships in Tallinn in the summer . He just missed the podium in the final with 46.37 seconds as fourth. After the 2016 season passed without improvement, it increased significantly in 2017. In June he already managed to finish several competitions under 46 seconds. In July it improved to 45.40 s and was able to compete at the World Championships in London a month later . In London, he reached the semi-finals as second of his heat, in which he was eliminated as the last of his run. Overall he finished 23rd. Only a few weeks later he also took part in the Universiade in Taipei. There he reached the final, in which he finished sixth.

In 2018, Re improved to 45.31s in June and then competed in the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona that same month . In the final he won the gold medal in his favorite discipline with a personal best of 45.36 seconds. Just two days later he won another gold medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay. In August he competed in both competitions at the European Championships in Berlin. After he narrowly failed to reach the finals as fourth of his semi-finals in the singles, things went better for him with the season and 6th place in the final. The 2019 season also ended quite successfully for him. In May he took part in the IAAF World Relays in Yokohama with his teammates . While he took fourth place with the 4 x 400 meter mixed relay, he missed the final with the 4 x 400 meter relay, but they were able to reach the B final and thus the ninth Secure space. After Re sniffed the 45.00 seconds mark in June, he undercut it in Switzerland at the end of the month and set a new national record with 44.77 seconds. He was the first Italian to stay under 45 seconds in the 400 meter run. With his performance in June, he met the required standard for the World Championships in Doha. There he initially competed over 400 meters in early October. After a successful run-up, he confirmed a time of under 45 seconds in the semifinals with 44.85 s, which was, however, just too slow for the final. In the overall result of the semi-finals, Re ran the fastest time of those who missed the finals and finished ninth. With his semi-final time, he would have finished sixth in the final. With the relay, he took sixth place four days later.

So far, Re has won three gold medals at Italian championships, twice over 400 meters (2017, 2018) and once over 200 meters (2018). As a member of the national team, he was able to continue training during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic . After the situation improved over the course of the year, he ran in July in his first competition after the lockdown in his hometown with a personal best of 20.69 s over 200 meters.
