Timur Morgunow gained his first international experience at the 2015 European Junior Championships in Eskilstuna , Sweden , where he finished fifth with 5.25 m in the final. Thereupon he did not start in any official competitions outside of Russia until 2018, as the Russian Athletics Federation was withdrawn from the start. It was not until July 2018 that Morgunow received the status of a neutral athlete and was allowed to participate in the European Championships in Berlin . In the final he improved his best performance to 6.00 m, equaling Serhij Bubka's U23 world record and only had to admit defeat to Swede Armand Duplantis , who jumped 6.05 m and also improved the world record.
In 2017 Morgunov became Russian champion in the outdoor pole vault and in 2018 in the hall.
