Tomáš Veszelka (born July 9, 1995 in Lučenec ) is a Slovak athlete who specializes in the triple jump .

Athletic career

Tomáš Veszelka first started in competitions in athletics in 2010. At that time, he first competed in the long jump, high jump and sprint. A year later he was concentrating mainly on the long jump and, more recently, the triple jump. In the latter discipline, he competed in the U18 World Championships in Lille in July . He moved into the final, in which 14.98 m took ninth place. In addition to the triple jump, he also took part in the long jump at the European Summer Youth Olympic Festival in Trabzon at the end of the same month , where he was sixth in both disciplines. He improved in the triple jump up to 15.26 m. In 2012 he improved to 15.45 m. In 2013 Veszelka started at the U20 European Championships in Rieti. He jumped in the qualification with a top performance of 15.91 m and made it into the final. In the final, however, he was almost half a meter behind his qualifying distance and thus finished eighth. A year later he retired from the U20 World Championships in the USA after qualifying. Overall, he landed in 14th place.

In 2015 Veszelka took part in his first international adult championships in the long jump at the European Indoor Championships in Prague. There he was eliminated in 22nd place after qualifying. In the summer he took part again in the triple jump at the U23 European Championships in Tallinn, where he finished fifth in the final with a best performance of 16.31 m. In 2016 he was able to improve again slightly. In 2017 Veszelka competed again at the European Indoor Championships , this time in the triple jump. There he missed the finals and ultimately took 13th place. In July he also took part in the U23 European Championships again. As in Tallinn, he was able to set a new record in the Bydgoszcz final with 16.63 m. With this he just missed the podium in fourth. A month later he also made it into the finals at the Universiade in Taipei. He came eleventh there. The 2018 season was initially difficult for Veszelka. After tearing a torn abdominal muscle, he had hardly any competition experience during the season when he competed in the European Championships in Berlin in August . Somewhat surprisingly, he made it into the final as the last of the top 12. He was able to leave four athletes behind and finished eighth, which was a big surprise for him and his coaching team.

In spring 2019 Veszelka competed at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow. In qualifying, he set up his indoor best performance with 16.78 m. In the final, he fell short of this distance and took sixth place. After he came close to the 17-meter mark at the national championships in the summer, he was able to surpass it in October at the World Military Games in Wuhan with a jump to 17.09 m. In addition to the new personal best, he also won the silver medal. So far Veszelka has won a total of 7 national championship titles in the adult division, five of them in the long jump and two times in the triple jump.
