Maxim Sergejewitsch Afonin ( Russian Максим Сергеевич Афонин ; born January 6, 1992 ) is a Russian shot putter .

Athletic career

Maxim Afonin gained his first international experience at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Brixen , where he finished eighth with 18.55 m. He then won the bronze medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival with 19.06 m. The following year he took part in the Junior World Championships in Moncton , but retired with 17.09 m in qualification and at the Junior European Championships in 2011 in Tallinn , he was eighth with a width of 19.10 m. In 2013 he reached ninth place at the U23 European Championships in Tampere with 18.18 m in the final .

After the ban on all Russian athletes in 2016, Afonin has been allowed to participate in international competitions as a neutral athlete since 2018. In 2018 he qualified for the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , where he finished 13th with 19.84 m. In the summer he was eighth at the European Championships in Berlin with 20.68 m. In 2019 he came ninth at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow with 20.30 m and in October he took part in the World Championships in Doha , where he was eliminated with 19.82 m in qualification . He was then at the Military World Games in Wuhan with 19.52 m ninth.

In 2016 and 2017 Afonin became the Russian champion in the shot put outdoors and in 2017, 2018 and 2020 also indoors.
