Leon Reid (born July 26, 1994 ) is an Irish sprinter of British origin who has been eligible to start for Ireland since August 2018.

Athletic career

Leon Reid gained his first experience in international championships at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2011 in Trabzon , where he won the silver medal over 100 meters and with the British 4 x 100 meter relay. At the Youth Commonwealth Games on the Isle of Man , he finished sixth over 100 meters for England in 2011 and won the silver medal with the English relay. Two years later he won the silver medal in the 200-meter run at the European Junior Championships in Rieti in 2013 and finished fifth in the final with the British relay. In 2014 he started for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , Scotland , where he was disqualified over 100 meters due to a false start and made it over 200 meters to the semi-finals.

In 2015 Read won the silver medal over 200 meters at the U23 European Championships in Tallinn . After two years without major international events, Reid took part again in the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in 2018 and surprisingly won the bronze medal over 200 meters. In August he started for Ireland at the European Championships in Berlin , where he reached the final over 200 meters and finished seventh in 20.37 s. He also started with the 4 x 400 meter relay, with which he was eliminated in the preliminary round in 3: 06.55 min.
