history

Van Teylingen to Teylingen

The Van Teylingen family may have come from an extramarital union of the Counts of Holland from the Gerulfinger dynasty . A knight named Gerrit (or Gerard), who was recorded in a document from 1143, acts as the oldest lord . Gerrit van Teylingen died in 1164; his son succeeded him as Hugo (basic) lord of Teylingen after . This was in turn replaced in 1172 by his son Wilhelm. Around 1200 Wilhelm I van Teylingen had Teylingen Castle built for himself .

Wilhelm I died in 1215. His three sons were Dirk I , Wilhelm II and Gerard. Dirk I. van Teylingen-Brederode became the progenitor of the noble lords of Brederode , while Wilhelm II, who was a confidante of the Dutch count's house, succeeded his father as lord of Teylingen.

When Wilhelm II died in 1244, he was inherited by his son Dirk. This was a political confidante of Count Floris V of Holland . Dirk, who died in 1282, did not leave a male heir.

Various other branches of the family

Van Teylingens from other branches of the family are known from later times. In the descriptions and monuments of the genealogist Aernout van Buchel , their ancestral tables are depicted on various gravestones. Maria van Malsen, Dietrich Sonoy's wife , also came from the Van Teylingen family.

The van der Duyn family, later elevated to the rank of count, also came from the van Teylingen family via the Brederodes.

coat of arms

The family coat of arms of the van Teylingen shows a red lion (taken from the Counts of Holland) on a gold background with extended claws and a silver or blue tournament collar over his chest. This beam is provided with three "pillars". The municipal coat of arms of Teylingen traces its coat of arms back to this.
