Braiding formula

Structure of a braiding formula

The braiding formula is a standardized designation for the construction of wire ropes . You are in a rope core wire , core strand , next layer of wires or strands, a liner, etc., and thus the construction and integration of the individual strands into a rope.

For example, an open spiral rope with the braiding formula 1 + 6 + 12 indicates the following: 1 core wire or core strand, around this core wire a wire or strand layer with 6 wires or strands is laid (wrapped), and around this wire layer another wire or strand layer laid with 12 wires or strands. The individual wires or strands of a rope can have the same or different diameters; with different diameters, however, only within a wire or strand layer.

Labelling

From the inside out is indicated:

  • Core wire, core strand or core
  • next wire layer or strand layer
  • etc.

The following rules apply:

  • Wires in a strand in round brackets
  • Wires of a wire layer with different diameters are summarized by an upper horizontal line
  • Cored wires (not load-bearing) are placed in square brackets
  • Profile wires identified by code letters (Z, K, I)
  • Diameter of round wire as an index in tenths of a millimeter

Examples:

  • Spiral rope (1 + 6 + 12)
  • Stranded spiral rope (1 + 6) + 6 (1 + 6) + 12 (1 + 6)
  • Locked rope (1 + 6 + 12) + 20Z
  • Stranded rope SC + 8 (1 + 6 + 12 + 18)
  • Stranded rope Seale design NF + 6 (1 + 9 + 9)

Insoles and snaffles

In addition to the wires and strands, inlays and bridles can also be specified. Wire ropes can, for example, have a core wire or core strand as well as an insert (also called a core). Bridles are fibers or solid polymers that are arranged to separate adjacent strands or wires in the same or superimposed layers or to fill in the gaps in the rope.

There are three types of insert materials:

  • Fiber core FC, made of natural fibers NFC or synthetic fibers SFC
  • Steel core WC, designed as wire strand WSC or as independently stranded wire rope IWRC
  • Inlay made of solid polymer SPC, in cylindrical shape or cylindrical shape with grooves
