The Sandkopf , a mountain with a height of 3090  m above sea level. A. , is located in the Goldberg group of the Hohen Tauern in Austria . The summit is located approx. 7 km as the crow flies east of Heiligenblut in the federal state of Carinthia , between the Kleiner Fleißtal and the Großer Zirknitztal . The normal ascent, which is marked and largely pathless, is easy but arduous to climb in dry and snow-free conditions . A good sense of direction is therefore an advantage during the tour. It should also be noted that there are no places to stop for refreshments (shelters, etc.) during the entire ascent (approx. 1550 meters in altitude). If the weather permits, you can enjoy the impressive view of the Großglockner ( 3798  m ), the Tauern main ridge (including the Hoher Sonnblick ( 3105  m )) and the Schober group from the summit .

rise

The normal ascent leads from the Oberschachnern settlement ( 1550  m ), near Apriach , first over a forest path to the alpine pasture area with the Schachnerhütten , further away and without any markings over the steep grassy slopes of the “Mönchsberg” to the “Upper Weather Cross” ( 2760  m ) and over one Schutthang (partly steep tracks) to the summit with a cross (walking time from Oberschachnern approx. 3½ to 4 hours).

The northeast ridge of the Sandkopf ( Sandkopfkamm ) connects it via the double-peaked Red Man ( 3097  m ) and the Goldbergspitze ( 3073  m ) with the Hohen Sonnblick ( 3105  m ). The crossing of the ridge is in the II level of difficulty .
