The Kilkenny Chess Congress is a year in the city of Kilkenny in southeast Ireland being transmitted chess tournament . It has been held since 1977, making it the oldest continuous open chess tournament in Ireland.

The tournament is played on a weekend in November from Friday to Sunday and comprises six rounds in the Swiss system . Based on the ratings of the participants, the tournament is divided into four tournament groups called Kilkenny International Masters , Kilkenny Major , James Mason Challenge (named after the Kilkenny-born chess player James Mason ) and The Challengers . Several grandmasters , international champions and other titleholders start in the Kilkenny International Masters , the entire field of participants in all four groups comprises around 200 players. The prize money for the group winners is between 200 euros in the Challengers group and 1000 euros in the Kilkenny International Masters.

The winners of the Kilkenny International Masters include Alexander Baburin (1994, 2005, 2016), Mark Hebden (2006, 2012, 2014, 2015), Gawain Jones (2007, 2011), Iwan Tscheparinow (2010), Anthony Kosten ( 2008), Ian Rogers (2001), Luke McShane (2000), Stuart Conquest (1998) and Michael Adams (1996, 1997).
