location

Vanikum is located west of Rommerskirchen and is in the immediate vicinity of the lignite power plant in Grevenbroich-Neurath (see: Neurath power plant ). This is west of Vanikum. To the west of it is Neurath.

history

Vanikum was mentioned in 1109 as Uenninchenheim , which comes from the Germanic faginingo haim and is translated as " Apartment of the people of Fagin (fagina = happy) ". Vanikum has belonged to the Dingstuhl Rommerskirchen since the Middle Ages.

After the French invaded in 1794, the area on the left bank of the Rhine became French. In 1798 the French divided the Rhineland into four departments (Rur / Roer, Rhine-Mosel, Saar and Donnersberg). Departments were subdivided into arrondissements / roughly administrative districts, these in turn into cantons / roughly districts and these again into mairies / mayor's offices. The Mairie Rommerskirchen was established as the lowest administrative unit in this area . This belonged to the canton of Dormagen in the Arrondissement Cologne in the Département de la Roer . After the withdrawal of the French occupation troops as a result of the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire in 1814, the Catholic Rhineland was awarded to Protestant Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. In 1815 Vanikum came to the municipality of Rommerskirchen, which belonged to the mayor's office and later to the office of Rommerskirchen and the district of Neuss.

The small town has about 1,000 inhabitants.
