Eckum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eckum is a part of the municipality of Rommerskirchen in the Rhine district of Neuss .

location

Eckum is bounded in the north by the Cologne-Grevenbroich federal railway line. In the east there is a Rheinbraun railway line . In the south, the transition to the villages of Eggershoven and Rommerskirchen is fluid. There are extensive agricultural areas in the west.

history

According to the name Eckum belongs to the village founding in the 6th to 7th centuries and probably arose from a single farm. The area around Eckum had a lot of fertile soil, which is why farms settled there. Eckum was first mentioned in a document in 1195, when Count Dietrich von Hochstaden sold his estate in Ekkincheim to Knechtsteden Abbey . The names changed over time to Ecginchem (1212), Eggenheim (1257), Ecginckeym (1297), Eckeym (1609) and finally Eckum. Since the Middle Ages belonged Honschaft Eckum the parish Rommerskirchen.

After the French invaded in 1794, the area on the left bank of the Rhine became French. In 1798 the French divided the Rhineland into four departments (Rur / Roer, Rhine-Mosel, Saar and Donnersberg). Departments were subdivided into arrondissements / roughly administrative districts, these in turn into cantons / roughly districts and these again into mairies / mayor's offices. The Mairie Rommerskirchen was established as the lowest administrative unit in this area . This belonged to the canton of Dormagen in the Arrondissement de Cologne in the Département de la Roer . After the withdrawal of the French occupation troops as a result of the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire in 1814, the Catholic Rhineland was awarded to Protestant Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. In 1816 Eckum came to the municipality of Rommerskirchen, which belonged to the Neuss district. In 1936, the town hall for the then Rommerskirchen office was built in Eckum. It still serves today as the administrative seat of the Rommerskirchen community, which has been enlarged since January 1, 1975.

Agriculture

Agriculture still plays an important role in Eckum today. The cooperative with a large granary is located right at the train station. Eckum used to have an agricultural engineering company and a sheep farm at the entrance to the village.
