history

The place was probably built in the 6th / 7th. Century. At least the Hoeninger House was already a knight's seat, which originally consisted of a castle with a moat. Even today, the courtyard complex at this location is surrounded by a moat. The Hoeningen family owned the Hoeningen house. One of their descendants was Otto von Hoeningen, who was abbot of Altenberg Abbey from 1276 to 1280 . In the 10th century, Hoeningen was first mentioned in a document as Hoangi. However, this certificate can no longer be found. During this time the settlement was described as belonging to the Kölngau . Since 1195 the "Hoingen" was also the parish with the parish church of St. Stephanus . The oldest part of the parish church is Romanesque. In Ramrath, the Lambertus Chapel was built on an artificial hill above the Gillbach in the 12th century. The Knights of Hoengen were first mentioned in 1227. Their castle was an open house in the Electorate of Cologne since 1387. Until 1794 Hoeningen belonged to the Dingstuhl Rommerskirchen in the Electoral Cologne district of Hülchrath .

After the French invaded in 1794, the area on the left bank of the Rhine became French. In 1798 the French divided the Rhineland into four departments (Rur / Roer, Rhine-Mosel, Saar and Donnersberg). Departments were subdivided into arrondissements / roughly administrative districts, these in turn into cantons / roughly districts and these again into mairies / mayor's offices. The lowest administrative unit in this area was the Mairie Evinghoven with the Commune Hoeningen. This belonged to the canton of Elsen in the Arrondissement of Cologne in the Département de la Roer . After the withdrawal of the French occupation troops as a result of the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire in 1814, the Catholic Rhineland was awarded to Protestant Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. At first, Hoeningen only belonged as a place to the mayor's office of Evinghoven and from 1839 the municipality of Hoeningen was formed. She belonged to the district of Neuss . It consisted of the four localities Hoeningen, Widdeshoven, Ramrath and Villau. Between 1840 and 1882, at least 235 people from the Hoeningen community emigrated to the United States . Since 1906 Hoeningen was connected to the public electrical network. In 1945 American troops occupied the area around Hoeningen. On January 1, 1975, the Hoeningen community was dissolved. It became part of the Rommerskirchen community.

Economy and Infrastructure

Although the place is very small, it can be seen as the center of the surrounding villages Ramrath, Villau and Widdeshoven, as the church, kindergarten and school are located in Hoeningen. Apart from a bank and a pub - the Hoeninger Hof - there is no retail store in Hoeningen. This is increasingly concentrated in the neighboring towns. In addition to the companies mentioned, there is also an agricultural trading company with grain silo systems on site. Before that there was a windmill that collapsed during World War II.
