St. Stephanus is the Roman Catholic parish church of Hoeningen, a district of Rommerskirchen in the Rhine district of Neuss .

history

In 1995 graves were found during excavations in the south aisle of St. Stephen. Century could be dated. Presumably, the graves were laid outside a small hall church at that time, as it has been preserved to this day in the neighboring Ramrath with the Lambertus Chapel . St. Stephanus itself was named as a parish church in 1195 and was under the patronage of the Cologne monastery St. Maria im Kapitol . The core of today's church goes back to a three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica built around 1110 , of which the preserved tufa components testify. Later extensions took place in brick.

In 1524 the south aisle was replaced by a wider and higher new building. After severe damage to the church, two pillars were broken out in the course of restoration work in 1643–52 to make the nave wider and brighter. In 1771 all walls were raised, the north aisle was extended to the east and a new tower was built. The north aisle and main aisle were brought under a gable roof. In 1864 the choir and the south aisle were expanded to the east. In addition, neo-Gothic ribbed vaults were installed in these components.
