Lambertus Chapel (Ramrath)
The Lambertus Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel in Ramrath , a district of Rommerskirchen in the Rhine district of Neuss . The pre-Romanesque building is considered to be the oldest building in the Rhine district.
history
Today's Lambertus Chapel is essentially the original chapel of the Carolingian Ramrath Court, which was built in the 9th or 10th century at the latest as a hall church with a retracted rectangular choir. Settlement has been documented in Ramrath since the 8th century, so the chapel building may have been preceded by a wooden predecessor. The court was mentioned in documents in 1285 and the Lambertus Chapel in 1577. The court with the chapel was owned by the St. Maria im Kapitol in Cologne until the secularization of 1802 .
A north aisle was added to the chapel in the 12th century. In 1814 it was laid down again, and in 1830 the open arcades were walled up. In 1949/50 a thorough renovation took place with the opening of the original pre-Romanesque window openings and the aisle arcades. The aisle was rebuilt in 1961 after the chapel was taken over by the parish of St. Stephanus Hoeningen .
