Giorgi Arweladze

Giorgi Arweladze ( Georgian გიორგი არველაძე ; born July 10, 1978 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian politician ( National Movement - Democrats ). From 2004 to 2005 he was Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). From November 2006 to January 2008 he was Minister for Economic Development of Georgia.

Life

Youth and Studies

After graduating from high school in 1995, he became a foreign policy officer at the non-governmental Center for Political Development in Tbilisi. In 1997 and 1998 he studied sociology and political science at Tel Aviv University . In 1999 he moved to Tbilisi State University , where he took a bachelor's degree in international relations . In 2000, he obtained a master's degree in public administration from the Georgian Institute for Public Affairs .

Ministerial official

In 2000 he became a research associate in the Judiciary Committee of the Georgian Parliament. In January 2001, he first moved to the Georgian Ministry of Justice under Mikheil Saakashvili as head of the prison reform department , and later became head of the information and analysis department. After Saakashvili's resignation, Arweladze also left the ministry.

Saakashvili's right hand

In November 2002 he became a member of the city council (Georgian Sakrebulo ) of Tbilisi, one month later Saakashvili's office manager as city councilor. Georgia's incumbent President Nino Burjanadze appointed him head of the State Information Center in November 2003 , and in 2004 he became the President's press spokesman.

MP

From April 2004 to October 2005 he was a Member of the Georgian Parliament , from June 2004 to October 2005 Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). At the same time he was head of the associated delegation of the Georgian parliament to the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO (NATO PV).

minister

In October 2005 Saakashvili appointed him head of the presidential administration. On November 20, 2006, he became Georgian Minister for Economic Development. On January 31, 2008, he was not accepted into the cabinet of President Saakashvili's second term in office and announced that he would switch to the private sector.

Association and party memberships

In 1996 Arweladze was Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Council of Youth Organizations of Georgia , and in 1997 Chairman of the Georgian Student Associations . In October 2001 he joined the United National Movement party founded by Saakashvili (today: National Movement - Democrats ).

He is married with two children and speaks English and Russian.
