Craig Leo Van Tilbury (born July 30, 1957 in Cedar Rapids (Iowa) , † August 13, 2010 in Tampa ) was an American guitarist and chess player .

As a guitarist he played in various bands over the course of his music career and appeared on stage with Steve Winwood and Barry Gibb , among others . In the late 1980s, he toured with Joey Dee & the Starliters .

Van Tilbury held the title of FIDE Master in chess . He played on the top board at ten Chess Olympiads , from 1978 to 1984 and 1990 for the US Virgin Islands and in 1994 and from 2002 to 2008 for the British Virgin Islands . At the 1984 Chess Olympiad in Thessaloniki , he won a gold medal for his score of 9.5 points from 11 games. His successes in individual tournaments included victories at the Washington DC Open in 1977 and the Jamaican Open in 1981. His last rating was 2264, his highest rating was 2350 in January 1979.

Van Tilbury spent his youth in Washington, DC and moved to Saint Croix in 1978 . In 1992 he settled in Tampa and worked there as a chess teacher. He died of a heart attack at the age of 53, leaving behind his partner and a daughter born in 2009.
