Joey Dee & the Starliters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joey Dee & the Starliters was an American musical group from the early 1960s.

history

Joey Dee (born June 11, 1940 in Passaic , New Jersey; actually Joseph DiNicola ) founded the band in 1958. From 1960, the formation appeared regularly in the New York dance club "Peppermint Lounge", which developed into a place to go for twist fans. Joey took advantage of this and together with Henry Glover wrote the track Peppermint Twist , which became a number one hit and million seller . The accompanying live album Doin 'the Twist at the Peppermint Lounge took second place in the album charts for six weeks .

Due to this success, the band also appeared in various music films such as Hey Let's Twist and Vive le twist . Dee also discovered aspiring musicians early on. In 1963 he hired the pianist Little Willie Littlefield , the guitarist Gene Cornish and the organist Felix Cavaliere for his group. The latter two later founded the Young Rascals . In the spring of 1966 - before Chas Chandler discovered him and signed him - Jimi Hendrix also played briefly with the Starliters.
