Peppermint Twist is the title of a pop song with a twist rhythm that was written by the Americans Joey Dee and Henry Glover . With the band Joey Dee & the Starliters , the Peppermint Twist became a number one hit and a million seller in the USA in 1962 .
The original
The fashion dance Twist, developed as early as the late 1950s, reached the height of its popularity in the New York dance bar The Peppermint Lounge when the band Joey Dee & the Starliters delighted the audience with their Twist titles in 1961. The New York-based record company Roulette Records took this success as an opportunity to produce the live long-playing record Doin 'the Twist at the Peppermint Lounge with Joey Dee and the Starliters . At the same time, the title Peppermint Twist was released on a single . Both records were released in October 1961. Since the original piece of music Peppermint Twist is over four minutes long, the record company split the title into Part I * and Part II, with Part II consisting of the piece's instrumental sequence (* is below for Peppermint Twist). The song Peppermint Twist was created in collaboration between Joey Dee and the songwriter Henry Glover. Most recently Glover had mainly achieved success in the rhythm and blues area , for example, he was involved in the Ray Charles title Sticks and Stones , which had reached number two in the rhythm and blues charts in 1960. The text of the Peppermint Twist explains the new dance and at the same time indirectly advertises the Peppermint Lounge on 45th Street: "Well meet me baby down at 45th street, where the peppermint twisters meet."
In its November 20, 1961 issue, the US music magazine Billboard first mentioned the Peppermint Twist in its Hot 100 hit list . After the title started from 68th place, it reached the top 10 four weeks later and on January 27, 1962 , it topped the Hot 100 for three weeks. Joey Dee replaced Chubby Checker with The Twist , the iconic twist par excellence. The Peppermint Twist was able to assert itself in the Hot 100 for 18 weeks. The title was in the charts of the competition magazine Cashbox for 20 weeks, but only reached second place there.
The Peppermint Twist with Joey Dee & the Starliters was also published in numerous other countries and also achieved good chart positions there (New Zealand 1st, Canada 3rd, Netherlands 8th). Roulette also brought the song out in Germany, but it didn't make it into the charts there.
Caterina and Silvio
Behind the duo Caterina and Silvio were Caterina Valente and her brother Silvio Francesco , who had already produced three number one hits together in Germany by 1960. After their last success with Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Honolulu beach bikini , the German record company Decca was planning another cover version with the peppermint twist . The text for this was provided by Ernst Bader , who had last been successful with his text to Dalida's song Milord . In the German text, the Peppermint Twist is praised as a good luck charm for young and old: “Oh, how nice when the two of us get along with twistin 'Peppermint… Look, Uncle Jonathan, like a twentieth, that's how uncle goes today ran. ”Decca brought the Peppermint Twist with Caterina and Silvio to German record stores in February 1962, but it only made it to eighth place in the top 40 of the German music magazine Musikmarkt .
More cover versions
In 1962, more cover versions of the Peppermint Twist appeared in the USA and Europe . Caterina Valente sang the song in English on London International , this time solo, as did Charlie Robinson on Carnival. Both versions appeared on singles in the US. In the UK, a singer named Bobby Stevens aka Ray Pilgrim released an English version on Embassy Records. Several foreign-language versions of the Peppermint Twist came onto the market in Europe . In Germany the Regina Girls (Baccarola) sang the Ernst Bader version. In Italy, Miki Del Prete had written an Italian text for Adriano Celentano , and an EP with Vince Taylor and His Playboys was released in France, which includes the French version of Georges Aber as well as Peppermint Twist Part II . Some performers included the Peppermint Twist in their albums, such as Chubby Checker in his 1962 album For Teen Twisters Only , and later the New York rock 'n' roll band Sha Na Na ( Rock 'n Roll Dance Party , 1999) or the British rock band The Sweet ( Sweet Fanny Adams , 1974).
