Rosendo Balinas

Rosendo Carreon Balinas (born September 10, 1941 in Manila , † September 24, 1998 in Antipolo City ) was a Filipino chess master .

Rosendo Balinas, a lawyer by profession, was considered the strongest chess player in Asia in the 1960s and 1970s, before the success of Eugenio Torres . In 1975 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master , then in 1976 the title of Grand Master .

Balinas won the Philippines championship seven times. From 1964 to 1976 he played for the Philippines at five Chess Olympiads , winning an individual silver medal in Havana in 1966 for his result of 15½ points from 20 games. Balinas won the Asian team championship in Hangzhou in 1981 with the Philippine team . His success in the Odessa chess tournament in 1976 was the first tournament victory of a foreign chess player in the Soviet Union since the tournaments in Moscow in 1936 ( Capablanca ) and Leningrad in 1937 ( Fine ). Balinas achieved its highest Elo rating of 2,440 in 1978 ; before the Elo rating was introduced, its highest historical rating was 2539 in April 1968.
