Dragoljub Velimirović (born May 12, 1942 in Valjevo , Yugoslavia , † May 22, 2014 in Belgrade , Serbia ) was a Yugoslav , later Serbian chess master .
Life
Dragoljub Velimirović received his first chess training from his mother Jovanka Velimirović, who was also the first Yugoslav national female champion. He received the national championship title after the Yugoslav championship in 1962. After successes in Skopje in 1971 (shared second with Albin Planinc behind Lev Polugajewski ) and the victory in Vrnjačka Banja in 1973, he was awarded the grandmaster title by FIDE .
Velimirović won the championship of Yugoslavia in Novi Sad in 1975 and in Nikšić / Belgrade in 1997 . In 1970 in Vrnjačka Banja he shared the victory with Milan Vukić .
In December 1984 Velimirović won a strong grandmaster tournament in Titograd together with Viktor Korchnoi , ahead of Michail Tal and nine other grandmasters.
Further tournament successes:
- Vinkovci 1970: 5th place (winner Bent Larsen , Velimirović and others ahead of Tigran Petrosian )
- Budva 1981: 1st place, zone tournament
- Vrsac ( Boris Kostić Memorial) 1985: 1st place
- Vrsac (Boris Kostić Memorial) 1987: 1st place (with Jaan Ehlvest )
- Metz (Open) 1988: 1st place
- Nikšić 1994: 1st place
Velimirović preferred sharp and complex play, so a structure of the Sosin variant with long castling and piece sacrifice is named after him. This style requires a lot of energy, so the results have been very uneven. His last Elo rating was 2407. His highest rating was 2575 in January 1986.
National team
With the Yugoslav national team Velimirović took part in the 1974 , 1978 , 1982 , 1986 , 1988 and 1990 chess Olympiads (in the second team). In 1974 he reached second place on the first reserve board both with the team and in the individual ranking. He also reached second place with Yugoslavia in the 1989 World Team Championships and took part in the European Team Championships in 1970, 1973, 1977 and 1980. With the team he reached second place in 1973 and third place in 1977.
