Basic position of the Sosin variant after 6. Bf1 – c4

Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

The Sosin variant , also Sosin system or Sosin attack , is an opening variant of the Sicilian defense in the game of chess . Bobby Fischer used them happily and successfully.

Their ECO codes are B86 to B89 .

To contain White Bc4, Black usually moves e7 – e6 on the sixth or seventh move.

White's setup is named after the Soviet chess player Weniamin Sosin and is characterized by the bishop move 6. Bf1 – c4, to which Black reacts according to the Scheveningen variant .

The white structure is practically created by changing trains, which look as if it is with the train sequence

1. e2-e4 c7-c5 2. Ng1-f3 d7-d6 3. d2-d4 c5xd4 4. Nf3xd4 Ng8-f6 5. Nb1-c3 e7-e6 6. Bf1-c4

would have started. Specifically in the classic variant after 5.… Nb8 – c6 or in the Najdorf variant 5.… a7 – a6, White can turn into the Sosin variant with 6. Bf1 – c4 because the “small center ” with e7 -E6 limits the path of Bc4 .

Fischer usually castled briefly to quickly open the f-file.

More modern is a setup with long white castling, as played by Dragoljub Velimirović . Long white castling is prepared with 7. Bc1 – e3 and 8. Qd1 – e2. 5.… Nb8 – c6, 7. Be3 Be7 8. Bb3 a6 9. De2 Qc7 10. 0–0–0 and now 0–0 11. g4 Nxd4 12. Rxd4 e5 13. Nd5 Bxg4 14. f3 Nxd5 15. Rxd5 Be6 16. Qg2 or Sa5 11. g4 b5 12. g5 Nxb3 + 13. axb3 Nd7 14. Nf5 exf5 15. Nd5 Qd8 16. exf5 Bb7 17. Thg1 are two typical attacks.

The bondage 8. Bc1 – g5 after 6.… a7 – a6 7. Bc4 – b3 b7 – b5 was revived by Karsten Müller in the grandmaster practice.

after 13.… Nb8 – c6

The variant is dangerous because White can often shake Black's position with a piece sacrifice on e6. In his rapid game of chess against Sergej Karjakin at the Melody Amber tournament on March 18, 2008 , Vasily Ivanchuk brought in 6.… a7 – a6 7. Bc4 – b3 b7 – b5 8. Bc1 – g5 Bf8 – e7 9. Qd1 – f3 Qd8 – c7 10. e4 – e5 Bc8 – b7 11. e5xd6 Be7xd6 12. Qf3 – e3 Bd6 – c5 13. 0–0–0 Nb8 – c6 the queen sacrifice 14. Qe3xe6 + !! , received after f7xe6 15. Nd4xe6 Qc7 – e5 16. In the Scheveningen variant , Black reacts best with 6.… Be7! and 7.… 0–0. Then Nf6xe4 threatens. Only after 8. Bc4 – b3 comes Nb8 – a6 and Na6 – c5.
