The Pascual comb rat ( Ctenomys rosendopascuali ) is a type of comb rats . The species occurs in north-central Argentina , where it has only been recorded in the province of Cordoba .

features

The Pascual comb rat reaches a head-trunk length of about 17.7 centimeters for the males and 15.9 to 16.6 centimeters for the females. It is a comparatively small species of the genus. The back color is solid gray, the belly color is a little lighter.

The karyotype consists of a chromosome set of 2n = 52 (FN = 62, 64 or 66). The sperm are slightly asymmetrical in shape.

distribution

The distribution area of the Pascual crested rat is limited to north-central Argentina , where it is only proven to be endemic from the place where the types were found at Mar Chiquita in the department of San Justo in the province of Córdoba .

Way of life

As with most other species of the crested rat, very little information is available about the way of life of the Pascual crested rat. Like all comb rats, it lives largely underground in duct systems. The animals eat vegetarian food from the available plants and are solitary animals.

Systematics

The Pascual comb rat is classified as an independent species within the genus of the comb rats ( Ctenomys ), which consists of about 70 species. In Wilson & Reeder 2005, however, the species was not listed. The first scientific description of the species comes from the Argentine zoologist Julio Rafael Contreras from 1995, who described it on the basis of several individuals from the Mar Chiquita region in the San Justo department in the Argentine province of Córdoba. The species is assigned to a species complex around the Mendoza comb rat ( Ctenomys mendocinus ) within the comb rats on the basis of molecular biological characteristics .

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species . Was named Ctenomys rosendopascuali after the Argentine zoologists Rosendo Pascual .

Status, threat and protection

The Pascual comb rat is not listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
