Laurens Perseus Hickok
Laurens Perseus Hickok (born December 29, 1798 in Danbury , Connecticut , † June 10, 1888 ) was an American philosopher .
Life
Hickok studied philosophy and theology at Union College in Schenectady . After successfully completing his studies, he was admitted as a preacher in 1822 and succeeded Dr. Lyman Beecher has successively pastored the Newton , Kent, and Litchfield wards of Connecticut state.
In 1836, Hickok was appointed professor of theology at the Western Reserve College in Ohio . At the beginning of November 1837, Hickok held a remarkable - and extremely political - funeral oration for the murdered opponent of abolitionism, Elijah Parish Lovejoy .
After eight years he moved to the theological seminary in Auburn , where he taught theology and philosophy until 1852. In 1852 he moved back to Schenectady as full professor for philosophy at Union College . In the same year, Hickok was elected vice president of the university. In 1856 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Until 1860, Hickok and Dr. Eliphalet Nott the College. When Nott retired that year, Hickok was elected director and, effective March 1, 1866, he was elected President of Union College. He held this office until 1868.
On July 20, 1868, Hickok gave his official farewell lecture and resigned from his university offices. He settled in Amherst and devoted himself only to his scientific work.
