Reverend Eliphalet Nott (born June 25, 1773 in Ashford , Colony of Connecticut , † January 25, 1866 in Schenectady , New York ) was an American doctor of theology, inventor and educator.

Life

Eliphalet Nott, the farmer's son Stephen Nott (1728-1790) and his wife Deborah Nott, born Selden (1733-1788), grew up in the New England Congregational society on, graduated in 1795 after studying theology , the Rhode Iceland College (now Brown University ) with a Master of Arts degree, was allowed to preach a year later and was called to preacher in the Presbyterian Church in Albany in 1802 . In 1805 he became a Doctor of Theology at the College of New Jersey and in 1828 a Doctor of Law.

Nott was President of Union College from 1805 until his death, succeeding Jonathan Maxcy . With a service tenure of 61 years, he ranks 1st on the list of longest-serving presidents at US universities to date. Parallel to this ten-year presidency, Nott was President of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1829 to 1845 . Nott, the head of this oldest technical college in North America, had never taken a science subject at any school, with the exception of theology . In the United States , for example, he is revered as one of the most persistent autodidacts in terms of his work as an inventor. Namely, Nott had largely acquired the science of heat himself. He had acquired the mathematical tools required for this with the support of his wife Sarah Marie “Sally” Benedict. Nott is the inventor of the first kiln heated with bright coal . In addition, Nott held 30 patents - for example relating to thermodynamics in the steam engine .

Nott was a member of the American Antiquarian Society since 1814 .

family

Nott married Sarah Marie (Sally) Benedict, the daughter of Reverend Joel Benedict from Plainfield, Connecticut. Sally Nott died on March 10, 1804. Three years later he married Gertrude Peebles. Gertrude Nott died in January 1841. In the second half of 1842 Nott married the educator Urania Sheldon.

Nott had three children - Joel, Sarah Maria and Gertrude.

Eliphalet Nott found his final resting place in the Vale cemetery in Schenectady.
