Hans Lülfing

Hans Lülfing (born November 24, 1906 in Leipzig , † July 9, 1991 in Berlin ) was a German librarian , palaeographer , historian and Germanist.

biography

Lülfing studied history, philosophy, German studies, geography and art history at the University of Leipzig from 1926 and received his doctorate there in 1931 with a dissertation on Julius Froebel's political views . He then completed a librarian training course in Leipzig from 1934 to 1936 and went to the Magdeburg City Library as a scientific librarian and temporary director , where he worked for 15 years.

In 1951 he returned to Leipzig and took over the management of the manuscript and incunabula department of the Leipzig University Library .

In 1952 he received a teaching position for book and library history at the University of Leipzig and in the same year was appointed chairman of the commission for manuscripts and incunabula at the GDR Ministry of Higher and Technical Schools. In 1957 he was appointed director of the manuscript department of the German State Library in Berlin and from 1959 to 1964 he was entrusted with the management of the incunabula department and the complete catalog of incunabula. From 1962 he held a professorship for the history of books and writing at the Institute for Library Science at Humboldt University Berlin until his retirement in 1972. His estate is in the Leipzig University Library.

Lülfing made important contributions to book and library history. In his numerous lectures and publications, particularly in the monograph “Johannes Gutenberg and the Book of the 15th Century” published in 1969, he understood the history of books and writing as an integral part of general cultural history.

His daughter is Daniela Lülfing (* 1950), Ltd. Library director at the Berlin State Library, Prussian Cultural Heritage.
