In the Middle Ages , Achain belonged to the Seigneurie Morhange .
In 1793 Achain was given the status of a municipality in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) and in 1801 the right to local self-government. From 1801 to 1871 it belonged to the former Meurthe department , which was renamed the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in 1871 . In 1871 the community was due to territorial changes through the course of the Franco-German War (1870-1871) in the newly created Alsace-Lorraine the German Empire incorporated, French but remained official and colloquial language. The realm of Alsace-Lorraine existed until the end of the First World War (1914–1918) and was then dissolved. Achain was in the Moselle department at that time, and this change was retained in 1918 when Moselle was re-assigned to France. Around 1900 it was given the German-sounding name "Eschen"; this was reversed in 1918. The village was badly damaged in the First World War, including the destruction of the church. It was rebuilt in 1921.
