Waltembourg ( German Waldenburg ) is a French commune with 243 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins and the canton of Phalsbourg .

geography

Waltembourg is located about eleven kilometers east of Sarrebourg at an altitude between 280 and 350 m above sea level, the mean height is 342 m. The municipal area covers 1.4 km².

history

The municipality came to France in 1661, the place itself was founded around 1680 for the workers at the military fortifications of Phalsbourg . It then became German again through the Peace of Frankfurt in 1871 and French again after the First World War . During the Second World War , the region was again under German administration.

Until the end of the First World War, the official French place name was Valtembourg .
